Thank heaven for little girls....

So we had to give the little UMs back...Thomas made the long car ride to the Lisbon airport alone with them and was quite sad when he came back. He said he kept thinking of them going off with the airline person, (a person we don't even know!)  past the security, out of his view. Oh how they amuse us! And in case there was any doubt, there really is a difference between girls and boys. With girls, there is so little urgency, so little instinct for aggression. Also friends and shell collecting take on such a huge role. They made friends with a little English girl in their class named Spencer (or Simon...Hanna kept getting confused) who lives on a boat. At this point Frederick got interested. Where? What kind of a boat? is it a houseboat or a boat that can sail? None of these details were known by the girls. They just knew she lived on a boat and they wanted her to come for a play date. We don't do play dates in Europe girls, I can barely feed the three of you (F has never asked for a play date in portugal ever). Kate announces she lives 12 hours away from here. BY CAR OR PLANE? asks Frederick. "Car..."
but you can tell she is guessing.  Before their tennis lesson we had a ritual of getting iced teas at the snack bar; and like many lines in europe it is chaos. For once I decided to stay out of it, and let them order for themselves. After many minutes i look over and they have not progressed an inch. Every portuguese grandmother and chubby English kid is pushing ahead. Finally Hanna comes over and I think they need more money. Aunt Ellie? yes Hanna? I figured out where Spencer lives! Great Hanna, but what about your place in line? I look over and young Kate is being buffeted around like a paper airplane in a storm...farther and farther from iced tea and their lesson has started. Hanna! why did you get out of line??!!
She lives in Singapore! I just asked her!
Kate is now being trampled, but she just stands there clutching her little five euro note in the air like this will signal something to the iced tea man. Hanna get back in line!!
The funniest was when they went carting...god we laughed. It was like a slow speed chase; a sunday drive rather than a car race. There was one father yelling at his son to OVERTAKE THEM!! OVERTAKE THEM! Kate was ahead because that is just how it started, and the others were too polite to pass her. So round and round they went like they had all day. Finally Hanna very, very gently edged past Kate, then lapped her, then Kate announced she, kate "was ahead again". And Hanna nods! Frederick Schumacher Wehlen, in his self appointed role as sheep herder to his girl cousins, was watching from his line at the real go cart track and was nearly apoplectic at the bonhomie and slowness.

Besides  collecting shells and singing along to the Bee Gees  (such a bonus for me) they seem to like to name things: they even named a clam shell (picked clean mind you..dainty eaters they are not),  'Shelly' and planned to take it home until the waitress mistakenly assumed otherwise and cleared the plates. Shelly! Thomas almost died laughing. I thought we were going to lose him.

We were a good combination the three Wehlens. I got to be head girl at the boarding school and plan all the fun stuff, while Frederick and Thomas poured over charts of the girls' caloric intake, sleep patterns, irrational fears of sharks in pools; and irrational belief seat belts are optional. Thomas was so flummoxed that Kate got a cold. On his watch! in the summer! I kid you not he kept analyzing the temperature and scratching his head. It does not make sense! It is almost impossible to transfer bacteria  at this temperature!!!

Update from Katharine...

Here is Kate:

Portugal is very hot and full of excitement. Today we went carting (go carts with motors) and I had to wear a hair net and helmet and neck brace. Then we made chocolate cake with chocolate dip for strawberries. We also did bungie jumping on a trampoline.
Then we went swimming. I am not afraid of sharks in the pool anymore.
Portugal is beautiful. This morning we went to the beach and got a lot of seashells. Tonight we will go sailing and eat clams at the best clam place.
We are going to play tennis all week. with British people.

Unaccompanied minors have arrived!

LIttle UMS! How happy I was to see them after a trying drive to Lisbon! I kept thinking of what the Masai said to me in Tanzania when we discussed the book the White Masai (the Swiss woman who married a Masai, then took off with the kid never to bring her back to her father) . He said: my blood! my blood! And there with their big smiles and skinny legs was mine. I handed a drivers license that said Eleanor Wehlen, when my brother had told them Ellie Brigham would pick them up..but it was no problem...blood is blood. They belonged to me.
Straight to the house where Kate showed us how to do a proper no holes barred, no chickening out belly flop. (see below), Then the kiddies ate their weight in clams, and danced under the sunset.
They seem really happy to be here. Kate is a little worried about missing her parents...and Hanna told us a story at dinner about how K told her mother to "spank her before she got on the plane" so she would not cry. And we laughed so hard at this Katism....that Thomas hugged her for a long time (see below). They are a salve for the soul. Tomorrow we will eat more cake, swim in the sea, and race go carts around a dangerous Portuguese track without waivers. We are ready.

Portugal is not as funny as Africa...and other deep thoughts

We are playing tennis many hours a day, then jogging, (this crazy Greek marathon idea is still alive, but 2014) then jumping in and out of the cold sea. This translates to a hell of a lot of sleep. F is in heaven...he plays three and a half hours of tennis a day in camp, makes chocolate cake and vegetable soup with Lydia and Filipo, the staff at the house...i.e. the famous butler who wears a tank top.. (for years he thought they owned it and we were their guests); and his cousins are arriving day after tomorrow. Should be some yucks when the girls arrive.
Thomas has taken up watching cricket in his free time, which makes me run from the room as if I am a vampire at the sight of daylight. I can watch almost any sport, but not that. Luckily the British open is about to start so things will get reaaaally exciting around here.
Oh ! the little Polish girl is back!! but she is huge now! not fat, but the whole cute kid in blue hat thing is gone. She looks like she could give the German army a thought or two. Kind of disappointing actually. Pinkie Dinkie has also been spied....he does not get larger, just thinner and whiter. This is the first year in a while we have not had guests.we miss the Sellies and Heather and Willem! even Boo was here back in the day...

I am getting funny texts from the Austrians about the summer party plans; K and my gay BFF have apparently got a few tricks up their sleeves already. Kids will go to soccer camp. Thomas and I will try to keep the weight on.

The picture of the boys with the elephant behind them was taken when we were walking. Only later when we had gone further, he came out from behind some bushes and was surprised (as were we)....Needless to say he was much closer than that. Happy Birthday Mimi!!!!!!

Poor little stupid Wildebeest that stayed to watch the lions eat a wildebeest!

Africa Photos (finally)

Long overdue. We have been in CH with Brighams, and are now in Portugal which is surprisingly cool. (weather due to change tomorrow). The tennis/golf bananza is soon to begin; at the moment we are too sleepy to do much but fall into the cold sea and lounge around drinking port. We miss the cousies and are hoping the girls come for a visit asap. Next blog will be with the pictures of the elephant hunters. Promise...xx
